Federal Furniture

The Federal Period really begins with the end of the Revolutionary War in 1785. It hits its peak with the signing of the Federal Constitution in 1791 and continued into the beginning of the Classical Period in the early 1820s. Before the Revolutionary War each colony, region, village and valley wanted to create its own identity and local style. With the joining of the colonies into the United States, the Federal style was born. Cabinetmakers from Maine to South Carolina began to follow a refined aesthetic of clean straight lines with intricate inlaid decoration.
