An important Classical birdseye maple veneer sewing box featuring a history of ownership by Maria Gansevoort Melville (b.1791), the mother of the author Herman Melville (1819-1891). New England, probably Boston or Coastal Massachusetts. Dated October 1814. Birdseye maple veneer on pine, figured maple cross banding, mahogany or walnut inlaid stringing with a mahogany, leather and bone interior. The secondary wood is pine throughout.
