Chalkware Squirrel

Home/Decorative Arts/Chalkware Squirrel

Description

WZ1018.2

Paint decorated chalkware figure of a squirrel.  Probably Lancaster or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Circa 1880

Chalkware animals were at one time popular as carnival prizes. The bottoms were weighted so the light pieces wouldn’t fly off the shelves if the wind picked up.  Still, they were a little delicate for the carnival life, and were eventually replaced with stuffed animals.
