Oil on plywood depictions of George and Martha Washington by Mose Ernest Tolliver, signed lower right “Mose T”.

Outside artist Mose Tolliver (1924-2006) was born on the fourth of July, outside of Montgomery, Alabama, one of 12 children. He left school in the third grade. In the early 1940s, he married a childhood friend and had 13 children of his own. In the late 1960s, a severe work injury crushed his legs, and he turned to painting to combat boredom and pain.  He often worked with simple house paint on a ‘canvas’ of plywood, creating colorful and whimsical works.

Tolliver’s work has been exhibited in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, and at the Philadelphia College of Art, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
