Calligraphy Drawing of “The Lovers”

Home/Works of Art/Calligraphy Drawing of “The Lovers”

Rare and important calligraphy drawing of two women titled, “The Lovers”.
Watercolor and ink on paper. Unsigned. American, 1840 – 1865.
Held in a modern black painted frame.

Why is it special?  This tender and honest depiction of the love between two women is astonishingly bold and brave for its time.  Although unsigned, we return always to Mary Ann Willson as the likely artist.  Miss Willson, and her “friend”, Miss Brundage, left Connecticut around 1810 to settle in Greenville, New York, where they purchased a few acres, built a cabin, and Miss Brundage farmed while Willson painted, selling her art locally.
